Taoism

What is Taoism?

How should you "live a good life" according to Taoism?

In Tao, there are three definite meanings:

  1. Ultimate reality, according to Tao, is too vast to be understood or described. For if you can describe Tao in words, it is not Tao. Although it cannot be described, it can be adhered to in the physical and spiritual sense through living alongside nature.

  2. "Chi" is the ultimate power of Tao flowing throughout the human body like water. Chi is used to increase flow through the body or to unblock any feelings throughout the body. Chi is a powerful spiritual mindset to increase both physical and spiritual strength. Acupuncture, Tai Chi, and Feng Shui are only a few methods to channel your chi and create a flow state in your body and in the environment around you.

  3. Humans and nature are meant to live in harmony, not to be overpowered by one or the other. To live in ultimate peace with your surroundings is to be content with yourself.

Yin & Yang is a term known to most people and is supposed to define a way of life. Although life is filled with constant change, there is harmony and steadiness as a balance. Unlike Western Philosophy where there is a definite "good" or "evil", Yin & Yang represents that there is always good in bad, or bad in good. Both sides of a particular spectrum must co-exist.

Through Taoism, we learn to accept nature and live with how things are, not how we believe things should be. Material wealth and living in excess becomes redundant, making life complicated, stressful, and competitive. Living with negative emotions such as these can create blocks in your chi which can affect your body spiritually and physically. Your goal in life should be to live in harmony and to achieve this lifestyle, you can live through Wu Wei.

Wu Wei is creative and active living, but also subtle, intricate, and in-tune. This is the way to live life above materialism and outside pressures. As stated earlier, the practice of acupuncture, Tai Chi, or Feng Shui can spark a flow in your life and guide you through a journey through Tao.

Feng Shui is a system of law built into how your home and work should be structured in relation to favorable and unfavorable flows of energy. From the position of your bed to the doorways of your room to the position of your body based on cardinal direction when you sleep, there are various methods of positioning your furnishings within your room to create an optimal flow of chi through the room. Better yet, avoiding technology and work in your bedroom will allow for a clear mind and better sleep. The possibilities for chi flow through Feng Shui are endless.
